Travel Photo Thursday: Birkenhead Lake, British Columbia
A few days ago I decided I needed a break from my regular routine – one that’s involved a lot of vacuuming and gardening to keep our house looking its best so we can sell it. For anyone who has been through the process you know what I’m talking about. Throw in plenty of guests, a husband working in a different city and a dog that still needs a few walks everyday and you might see why I needed a touch of nature to ground me.
I drove to Birkenhead Lake Provincial Park – about an hour past Whistler – with my dog as company, and as my early warning bear detector. Only one problem. She’s scared of her own shadow and spent half the night in the tent with her ears cocked…listening. At least she provided something to talk to.

The campsites are nothing special. None have views. But it’s only a short walk to the lake and at this time of year there are few visitors.
The lake gets busy in the summer with boaters. Plus the hikers and bikers show up to investigate the 9 kilometer trail paralleling the lake. Some come to fish and many are probably like me – sitting by the water, just enjoying the view.
The next day I felt infinitely better – though the dog was sleep deprived from her night on guard – and being woken at 5 am with the tent shaking. I never did figure out what that was, and it’s probably better that I don’t.

If you decide to go you can make reservations. Campsites are $18 per night payable to a park person who drives around looking for guests. Bring bug spray – just in case the mosquitoes are biting.

Beautiful photos – it looks so peaceful there. And your pup is adorable!!
It was peaceful and a nice change of pace – however brief.
Our dog Torrie, a rescue from the Caribbean, is great – just a little nervous when there are new sounds and smells.
Beautiful. The first photo reminds me of the Milford Sound in NZ.
Don’t feel bad–our 45lb dog is scared is scared of nature’s smallest creatures!
I have only seen Milford Sound on a cloudy day so can’t compare – especially since it was such a long time ago. Our dog liked the swimming part of the trip – but can’t get over how nervous she is out of her element.
Love that lake in the morning pic!

It was a very peaceful, very beautiful morning with nary a bear in sight.
Gorgeous but did you have to mention mosquitos? I’m getting itchy just thinking about it!

These pictures are absolutely stunning. Selling a house can be so tiring! You definitely needed a break from all the cleaning – and you couldn’t have chosen a better spot.

I haven’t heard of Birkenhead Lake but it does look like a perfect getaway. Your dog sounds adorable and I’m with you, I don’t think I would want to know what the shaking was either.

@Sophie @Kerry-An @Laurel – All this praise about a beautiful dog will likely go to her head. Heading up to a beautiful lake definitely rejuvenates the soul.
Yeah, no shaking tent for me, but that morning view is breathtaking.

these shots capture a similar scene to the one I came across during a boat ride in Switzerland. The two countries seem to be similar, though Canada is much wilder, of course…

Wish I could wake up to that view every morning. I did wait for a good forecast before heading out.
I’m heading to Switzerland in a few weeks and haven’t been for decades – will be checking out the lake scenery when I’m there. Thanks for stopping by.
This looks just lovely! It is making me even more excited for the Canadian leg of our upcoming 7 month road trip/camping adventure with our dogs!! Thanks for sharing your experiences and photos.
Birkenhead Lake is worth a visit – very pretty and I’m sure you’ll end up having a fine time in Canada. Happy travels.
