Weekly Photos: Decorated Masai Warrior & Family
A few years ago while in Tanzania, my husband and I had the chance to learn about the Masai culture through intimate conversations with a local chief – a well spoken fellow who had journeyed to the United States and Europe. He had serious concerns then about the future of the Masai with so many of the young people heading for the cities.
The chief generously allowed us to visit the inside of his hut – claustrophobic and smoky in my opinion. On another occasion we were encouraged to drink the special broth – a mixture of boiled goat and blood – that the Masai warriors used to fortify themselves.
Here is one of the Masai warriors we met.

Wonderful photos. Quite an experience to have such an up close and personal visit with the Masai people. I don’t know how well I would do drinking boiled goat and blood, however.
The drink would be what I would call an acquired taste.
What a fantastic experience Leigh! Lovely shots, and thank you for joining Travel Photo Thursday!
Loved this, the photos and information. What are those guys whimps, or something; they boil the blood?
You might not want to utter the word wimp in close proximity to one of these guys. They’re tough.
A simple life and yet they look so much happier than other people in life who have more.

I think the more always refers to material things – and the older one gets the more one realizes that material goods really don’t bring happiness- life might be easier but happiness no. You are so right.
Great experience and photos! I don’t think I will like the broth taste – I don’t like blood or goat individually, not sure mixing them is a good idea.

I’m with you. I don’t like those things individually either. Nonetheless an incredible experience.
I think the mixture is an acquired taste – but one the Masai grow up with.
