Fabulous Friday Finds – HikeBikeTravel’s Granola
I’ve started a new Friday column – Fabulous Friday Finds.
Look for any great travel deals I find, particularly useful or interesting travel articles, travel themed contests and any other travel tidbits that catch my fancy.
Fabulous Friday Travel Dreams
A post last week by Ordinary Traveler featured a National Park in Croatia I’d never heard of – The Plitvice Lakes. What a magical looking spot it appears to be. Located two hours south of the capital city of Zagreb the park features emerald coloured lakes and a host of waterfalls.

Fabulous Friday Discovers Funeral Planning
Do you ever think about what you would do with your remains? I haven’t given it much thought – yet. But the Traveling Canucks on a trip to Turkey were suitably impressed with Anitkabir – the Mausoleum of Mustafa Kemel Ataturk, the Father of Turkey and wrote a fine blog – entitled When I Die, I Want One of These. If your thoughts run to mausoleums you better start saving or become a leader of a country.

Fabulous Friday Outdoors
It’s April 1st but that doesn’t mean the ski season is anywhere near finished. In fact in Chamonix, France skiing goes well into May! Chamonix is famous for extreme skiing – fortunately a huge variety of terrain covering 3 mountains means all levels can be accommodated. You can take a ski holiday in Chamonix over a period of up to 6 months. Then when summer comes along it’s a mecca for hikers. And that’s just where I’m heading in July. I’ll be hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc over 10 days with my daughter.

Fabulous Friday Cooks
On every kayaking and backpacking trip I organize, my homemade granola comes with me. It’s a recipe I’ve had for decades. I never tire of this granola – partially because there’s lots of flexibility in ingredients, but also because it’s moister than most and you don’t have to choke on rolled oat dust.
HikeBikeTravel’s Granola

HikeBikeTravel's granola with dried blueberries & cranberries
3½ c. rolled oats
2 c. wheat germ
2 c. of a combination of sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, sliced almonds or hazelnuts
½ c. sunflower or canola oil
2/3 c. honey (or less and add more water)
2/3 c. water
1 tsp. vanilla
Mix together and spread on a cookie sheet. Bake at 350F for 15 minutes. then stir and continue baking another 15-20 minutes. Cool and add assorted dried fruit to taste – cranberries, raisins, currants… Keep in an airtight container in the fridge.
It’s not low in calories but it is packed with vitamin E, potassium, iron and soluble fiber.
Have a great weekend. If it ever stops raining in Vancouver I’ll head to the Nitobe Japanese Gardens at UBC to photograph the cherry blossoms.

Thanks for educating me about that area. It looks like a must visit place if I ever get to Croatia.

That granola looks great thanks for posting the recipe! I thought about what to do with my remains i joked to my wife about getting mummified.
There’s a fellow up in Nederland, Colorado who got himself cryogenically frozen – for a better day. There was a funny film about it on the Banff film festival world tour many years ago.
You won’t go wrong with the granola. Thanks for stopping by my site.
I find I need at least a half a day a week to see what the rest of the travel universe is doing and saying. Fabulous Friday makes me get that job done. Are you coming to TBEX??
