Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Quebec

iles de la madeleine Îles de la Madeleine, Quebec Detailed itinerary coming in September 2010.

The Madelene Islands are a string of six islands, linked by sand dunes, in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. They can be accessed via a 5 hour ferry ride from Prince Edward Island or a flight from Montreal, Quebec City or Gaspe.  The islands remain largely unknown, even to Canadians.

It is possible to visit the Îles-de-la-Madeleine throughout the year though their winter charms may be less appreciated by many tourists. In spring, summer and fall there are loads of activities possible including the following:

  • lots of bike touring, including about 100 kms on Quebec’s Green Route
  • windsurfing and kitesurfing
  • long beach walks
  • birding, especially since the islands are on a migratory route
  • boating and sea kayaking
  • cave swimming
  • golfing

The mostly French speaking Madelinots (as the year round locals are called) are mainly of Acadian descent though there are also shipwreck survivors who never left. They are renown for their hospitality.

You can clearly be as busy or as relaxed as you choose to be but you can’t help but dine well. On these small islands there are over five recommendations in the ‘Where to Eat in Canada’ book !! Also look forward to superb and interesting accommodation choices including a converted convent.

A visit to these islands in combination with a stay on Prince Edward Island will surely be a magical trip.
