A Guide to Hiking the Cumbrian Way, England
Detailed itinerary coming in July 2010.
The Cumbrian Way is a 70 mile (100 km), signposted walk that was established in the 1970′s. It takes you through some of the finest countryside and scenery in all of England. The walk heads through the heart of the Lake District in the northwest corner of England. It begins in Ulverston and heads north to Carlisle, generally following low lying valleys though three steep climbs need to be negotiated. Most people take 5 to 7 days to complete it. Camping is possible though there are numerous B&B’s along the route with towns appearing at well placed intervals.
Scenery is spectacular with numerous lakes and mountainous backdrops adding to the charm. Unfortunately the Lake District portion of the walk receives the most rain in all of England (which is saying something!!) so it is extremely important to go prepared for adverse conditions. The driest months to hike are considered to be May and June though luck always seems to part of the equation. One can only hope that the weather gods smile on at least a few days of one’s journey.
