Nicola Ross is now the author of two books. The first book published in 2015 – Caledon Hikes – Loops and Lattes describes 37 loop hikes in the Caledon region northwest of Toronto. Her most recent book – Halton Hikes – Loops and Lattes does the same thing but covers the area from Erin south through Milton all the way to Hamilton and east to Mississauga.
Through trial and error, and as she explains – lots of wrong turns, mosquitoes, slippery roots, hard to find trailheads and missing trail blazes she delivers a book packed with great ideas and everything you need to know to carry out the hikes. This includes a table on where to park, start and end points, fees if any, closest town or village, length and difficulty of hike, time needed and most importantly where all the best cafés are. Of note, she includes both the number of calories you’ll burn and number of steps taken.
Nicola provides an overview of each hike – so you’ll quickly be able to see if it’s something you want to do. Then she provides a detailed route description along with a small map. Since the books are both paperbacks and don’t weigh too much, you can easily take them with you.
Also of note is the fact that her writing style is wonderful. These are not just guidebooks but books that brim with life thanks to lots of short anecdotes.
If you live in southern Ontario and are a hiker, I guarantee you’ll love these books. You can purchase both online here for $24.95 + shipping and GST. I also have one of your choice to giveaway. (See below.)
Nicola is also the author of two guest posts on my blog, both of which are great reads – Hiking Among the Zapatecas in Mexico’s Sierra Norte Mountains and Weekending in Caledon: Hamptons of the North.
