A Visit to Pretty Blue Rocks, Nova Scotia
I returned to Blue Rocks, Nova Scotia after more than a 33 year hiatus. The last time I was here was in the early dating phase with my husband John – and we’ve been married now for almost 38 years.
At the time we were both working as geologists for the summer in Nova Scotia – but for different companies. My company gave me a vehicle and a cook prepared our meals. His company gave him a vehicle and weekly food allowance. That meant we could indulge weekly in wine and scallops in the Lunenburg area and then head to Blue Rocks Nova Scotia – a 10 minute drive away, to walk off the meal.
That wine we’d drink was probably Liebfraumilch or Black Nun. That was living though I wouldn’t be caught dead drinking that stuff now. But a hearty yes still to the scallops.

Blue Rocks is just minutes by car from Lunenburg
When I revisited Blue Rocks by bike what most struck me – apart from the totally quiet feeling to Blue Rocks – was its timeless beauty. I spoke with someone last night who had found a local to chat to – and she was told that there are still six fisherman working out of Blue Rocks. It’s also the type of place people retire to.
Should you make it as far as Lunenburg don’t miss the chance to explore this small fishing hamlet. Blue Rocks Nova Scotia is a place untouched by time.

Looks absolutely gorgeous – I’d love to see it “live” 🙂
@Annie The Blue Rocks area has a lot of history for my husband and I so that also makes it special. But if you make it to Lunenburg don’t miss a visit.
Absolutely amazing blues!!!
I host a weekly link party called “Oh, the PLACES I’ve been!” The link goes up at 7pm EST on Thursday. I hope to see you then!

@The Tablescaper Thanks for stopping by. I’ll check you out in the fall after my summer travels have simmered down and see about linking up.
What a picturesque little fishing village!
@Gregory Thanks. It’s a memorable one.
Hi Leigh,
Thanks for sharing your sweet dating story and that sweet place that is Blue Rock. It’s nice to find places that are so timeless. Blue Rocks looks so charming and tranquil. I haven’t been to Nova Scotia and I look forward to visiting someday.
@Marisol Blue Rocks holds nothing but good memories for me. Nova Scotia has been lovely and the people are exceptional.
It seems like everything BUT the rocks is blue. That looks like such a quiet place. Great story on your early dating days. I had no idea you were a geologist.
@Micehele The key word here is WAS a geologist. I haven’t been one for years and have forgotten much of what I knew.
I love the cobalt blue color of the water. I am sure the water is very cold, but I want to jump in and drink up all the water. It reminds me of the water color in Quetico.
Very cool that you got to go back to a place important in your relationship. I love going back to places I visited that have important personal connections.
@Ted It was a treat to revisit. I certainly don’t live in the past but it is fun to revisit places that really touched us.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen water that perfect! Definitely worth going out of the way for that blue.
@Jess Agreed. Interestingly much of the river water I see here in Nova Scotia is very brown from all the tannin.
Looks wonderful! Lovely photos.
@Kathryn Blue Rocks is a beautiful spot to visit.
We were in Nova Scotia about 35 years ago and we loved it. We took the ferry from Bar Harbor, spent a night near Lunenburg and then spent a week in Cape Breton. It was a memorable trip. We’d love to go back some time. We’ll put Blue Rocks on the list.
@Billie I hope you get the chance to return. Fortunately I think they are planning to reopen the ferry next year between Bar Harbour Maine & Yarmouth, NS. Don’t miss a quick trip to Blue Rocks. It’s a memorable place.
Your photography and writing both are mind-blowing. I have become a fan of your writing.
Thank you Philip.
What a beautiful place to have met and started your relationship.
Your reference to Liebfraumilch and Black Nun took me back to Ottawa, though I can’t recall who I shared those bottles of wines with.
Glad you were able to revisit Blue Rocks. It’s looks so serene.
@Marcia It seems I’m not the only one who has been drinking Liebfraumilch & Blue Nun! But when did you last try those wines?? All part of the learning curve of life.
Breath-taking scenery – that’s all I can say. This little blue boat is so charming!
@Agness The scenery along the south shore of Nova Scotia is hard to beat.
Aw, what a sweet post. And what a bummer that my spouse and I missed this spot when we were in Lunenburg. Beautiful saturated photos . . . I feel like I’m there – well almost!
Liebfraumilch was what budding wine drinkers consumed in Australia back then too! This place is picture postcard material. Beautiful to look at, but possibly not to live in (unless you are a fisherman I guess). It would be amazing to go back after so much time and it look exactly the same.
@Jan We are very obviously of the same generation – and the stuff was popular in Australia?? That makes me smile. The place is timeless and I do think there is the odd retiree there now.
@Muza-chan Thanks – the colours make the place.
First time visiting and I’m enjoying your post on Novia Scotia. Beautiful coastal views and I love all the vivid colors and scenic views, thanks for sharing
@Noel Thanks for stopping by. I’ll check you blog out once I have reliable internet in a few days.
You sure had a pretty sweet deal back in the day. Who can say no to scallops, right? Looks like a calm and quiet area.
@Salika I don’t think we realized what a great deal we had at the time. Scallops were a regular meal and not the treat they are now.
Black nun? 😉
@Bob It’s been a lot of years since I’ve touched the stuff.
It certainly looks like a wonderful place to retire to….although I am not sure what you meant about the warm body…
But how lovely to return to a place that you enjoyed with your husband in your younger dating years.
Beautiful scenes. and no I have never been to Nova Scotia. But it is on my list, so thank you for this tour.
Have a wonderful week.
@Jill The place was so quiet it was hard to find a living soul – hence the warm body. You don’t need long to visit but it’s worth the trip.
Oh what a romantic setting for you two . . .and I hear you on the wine. We hit 33 next week, by the way. As usual, loved the photos and the story that went with it was great!
@Jackie Congrats on 33 next week. We’re in October. I think you would very much enjoy the whole area.
We will hit 33 in July/2019 and Blue Nuns brought back a lot of memories for me when we were dating. We will be visiting Halifax this September/2019 , Blue Rocks and Lunenburg are on our list.
@Hung I hope you enjoy it as much as before.
