Castle Mountain Resort and Pass PowderKeg are the only two ski hills in Alberta’s southwest. Both can easily be skied on a weekend trip from Calgary and in theory they could be skied in a day, at least if you like night skiing.
Castle Mountain has a reputation for being a little quirky – but at the same time extremely friendly. As they say in their manifesto, if you’re looking for a ski hill where you’ll find high speed quads and big, comfy lodges while sipping complicated lattes, then this place is not for you. But if you want a laid back ski hill that caters to both experts and beginners – at an affordable price – in a beautiful area then you should check it out. It’s only a 2.5 hour drive from south Calgary.
Pass PowderKeg reminds me of skiing when I was a kid. On a cold Friday night every kid and high school student in the Crowsnest Pass area seems to be here. Parents can drop their kids off knowing they won’t get lost and they’re with their buddies. Kids get a taste of freedom early at a small resort like this. One of the big draws is the ski jump – the only one for miles around. You might want to ask these kids for their autographs now – as a lot of them seem to have the skill and passion of budding Olympians.
For an in-depth look at why you should make a weekend trip to southwest Alberta check out my SnowSeekers blog here – and have a look at what’s in store for you when you visit.
When was the last time you went night skiing? Would you do it again?
Thanks to SnowSeekers for making this post possible and for the friendly folks at Castle Mountain Resort and Pass PowderKeg for showing me around.
